Where a panel based system appears
Larger houses, houses converted into flats, sheltered housing and some HMOs use a system with a control panel rather than standalone interlinked alarms, because monitoring, fault reporting and a proper standby supply become worth having. That is a design decision from the risk assessment, and it brings the maintenance obligations of a commercial system with it.
Testing and replacement at home
Test with the button on a schedule you will keep, and replace each alarm at the end of the service life printed on it rather than when it fails. Most domestic alarms are designed for a fixed number of years and then to be replaced whole. Writing the replacement date in a calendar when you fit them is the single most effective piece of maintenance available in a house.
