A conventional system tells you a zone is in alarm. An addressable system tells you which device. That one difference changes the wiring, the panel, the cost of finding a fault and the size of building each is sensible in, and it is the decision that most affects what the system costs you over twenty years rather than on the day it goes in.
How each one is wired
A conventional system runs separate circuits from the panel to each zone, and every device on a circuit looks the same to the panel. An addressable system runs a loop that returns to the panel, with each device carrying its own address and reporting individually. The loop gives resilience as well as identification: a single break can often still leave every device connected from one side or the other.
What that means when something goes wrong
On a conventional system a fault or an alarm gives you a zone, and somebody walks the zone looking for it. On an addressable system the panel names the device. In a building where a zone covers one small floor that difference is small. In a warehouse or a multi storey block it is the difference between a five minute job and an afternoon, every time, for the life of the system.
Cost over time rather than on the day
Conventional equipment is cheaper to buy and usually cheaper to install in a small building. Addressable equipment costs more up front and less to maintain, extend and fault find. The crossover point depends far more on the number of devices and the difficulty of physically reaching them than on floor area. A quote that compares only the installed price is comparing the least important number.
Which suits which building
Small single occupancy premises with a handful of zones are well served by conventional equipment. Anything with many devices, restricted access, phased evacuation, interfaces to plant or a likely future extension is an addressable case. Mixing the two on one site is possible through interfaces, and it is usually a sign that a decision was deferred rather than made.
Questions people ask about addressable fire alarm system
Is an addressable system always better?
Not always. In a small, simple building with easy access, a conventional system can be entirely appropriate and cheaper. The advantage of addressable grows with device count and with how hard the devices are to reach.
Can a conventional system be converted to addressable?
It is effectively a new installation: different panel, different wiring topology, different devices. What can sometimes be reused is containment and cable routes, which is not nothing but is not a conversion.
Do addressable systems have fewer false alarms?
Not inherently, but they make false alarms far easier to diagnose because the panel names the device that operated. That is what actually reduces repeat unwanted alarms over time.
