Surveyor fees in the UK are set by three things: the instruction, the building and the market the firm works in. There is no scale fee and there has not been one for decades, so two competent firms can quote quite differently for the same job without either being wrong. What makes quotes comparable is a written scope, and it is the buyer who has to insist on it.
Get the instruction written down
One paragraph naming the property, the level of report and what is included is enough. Sent to three firms it produces three comparable numbers. Sent to none of them it produces three different assumptions.
Know which fee model you are in
Residential survey work is fixed fee. Party wall work is usually hourly or a fixed fee per appointment. Dilapidations and commercial work is hourly or a percentage. Expecting a fixed fee where the profession works hourly wastes everybody's time.
Ask what is not included
Travel, parking, congestion charges, extra copies, a second visit and expert evidence are the usual extras. Most firms will tell you plainly if you ask, and none of them will volunteer it. Get the exclusions in the same email as the fee, so that the comparison between two firms is a comparison of the same job.
Weigh seniority against price
A junior surveyor at a lower rate under supervision is a legitimate offer and often good value. What matters is who attends, who signs, and whether the fee reflects the answer. Ask who attends, who signs and whether the person attending has worked on this kind of building before, and take the answer seriously.
Do not let fee decide a contentious instruction
Where a report will be argued about, in a dispute, a claim or a negotiation, the cheapest report is the one most likely to be worth nothing. Buy the report that will stand up. On a dilapidations claim or an expert instruction, the fee difference between firms is small against the sum being argued about.

Is a chartered surveyor more expensive?
Sometimes, and the premium buys a regulated professional with a complaints route and mandatory insurance. On anything that might be disputed, that is the point of the fee.
Do surveyors charge VAT?
Most established practices are VAT registered, so ask whether the quoted figure includes it. It is the single most common reason two quotes look different when they are not.
