The useful RAMS template is trade-specific and deliberately incomplete. It carries the parts that genuinely repeat, which are your company details, your competence records, your standard sequence for a task you do every week, and your emergency arrangements. Everything about this site, this client and this week is left blank, because those are the fields a reviewer reads first to decide whether you have actually thought about their job.
What a template can safely pre-fill
Company identity and insurance. Named supervisor and the operatives' training and card records. The standard method for the trade task, written once properly. Standard COSHH assessments for the products you always use. Plant you own and its inspection regime. The generic emergency arrangements. Those change rarely and rewriting them every time introduces errors rather than removing them.
What must be blank every time
The site address and the client. The dates and the programme. Access to the work area and how you get materials there. The specific hazards of this building or site, including what is above, below and next to you. The people affected who are not yours, meaning occupants, the public and other trades. Rescue arrangements that reflect this site's layout. And the briefing record, which cannot exist until you brief.
Why free packs so often get rejected
Because they are complete. A pack you download with every field filled describes somebody else's job, and a site manager who has read fifty of them recognises the wording. The economical answer is one good template you own, kept current, plus twenty minutes of genuinely site-specific writing by somebody who looked at the site.
Version control, which is dull and matters
Put a version number and date on the template itself and on every issued pack, and keep the issued copy exactly as it went out. When a client asks in eight months which version their operatives were briefed on, an answer of we always use the current one is not an answer. This is also how you stop a superseded method statement circulating in three vans.
