A portable extinguisher is a simple machine and every part of it is something the monthly check looks at. Knowing what each component does turns that check from a ritual into a diagnosis, because most defects announce themselves at a specific part rather than in the unit as a whole.
Body, valve and pressure
The body is the pressure vessel and carries the label, the serial number and the manufacture date. The valve assembly at the neck holds the operating lever, the pin and, on stored pressure units, the gauge. The propellant is either stored with the agent in the body or held in a separate cartridge that is pierced when the unit is operated. Corrosion at the base of the body is the most common reason a unit is condemned.
Pin, seal and lever
The pin locks the lever. The tamper seal ties the pin so that it cannot be pulled without leaving evidence. The lever drives the valve open. A missing pin, a broken seal or a bent lever each take the unit out of service, and none of them can be put right by the person who finds them.
Gauge, hose and horn
The gauge reads the stored pressure and should sit in the green band. Carbon dioxide units have no gauge and are weighed instead, because the contents are liquid under pressure and a gauge would read full almost to the end. The hose must be attached, supple and clear; a perished or blocked hose is a total failure at the moment of use. Carbon dioxide horns should turn freely and modern ones are frost free.
Label, bracket and sign
The label carries the class ratings, the operating instructions and the safety warnings, and it has to face outward and be readable. The bracket or stand keeps the unit where the plan says it is. The sign above identifies the point from across the room. All three are part of the provision, and all three are checked.

Which part fails most often?
In practice, the ones a person interacts with: seals broken by handling, hoses damaged by being used as a carrying handle, and labels made illegible by cleaning.
Can parts be replaced individually?
By a competent engineer at a service, yes. Hoses, horns, seals and pins are routine replacements. The body is not repairable and a damaged one ends the unit.
Why do carbon dioxide units have no gauge?
The contents are a liquid with a vapour above it, so the pressure stays near constant until the liquid has gone. Weight is the only honest measure of how much is left.
