An aspirating system does not wait for smoke to reach a detector. It continuously draws air from the protected space through a pipe network to a sensitive detector in an accessible cabinet, which means the sensing element is somewhere an engineer can reach and the sampling happens somewhere they cannot.
How it works
A fan draws air through small holes in a pipe network running through the protected space, and passes it across a highly sensitive detector. Because the sample is actively collected rather than waiting for smoke to drift to a ceiling, detection can happen at very low smoke concentrations and much earlier than a point detector in the same room would manage.
Where it earns its cost
Server rooms and data halls, where very early warning is worth a great deal and airflow would carry smoke past a ceiling detector. Cold stores, where point detectors are unreliable. Atria and high roof spaces, where a ceiling detector cannot be reached for maintenance. Heritage interiors, where the pipework can be concealed and the detector housed elsewhere. Each of these is a case where a point detector is either ineffective or unmaintainable.
Sensitivity and false alarms
The sensitivity that makes these systems valuable also makes them capable of responding to things a point detector would ignore, which is why they are normally set up with multiple alarm thresholds: an early warning level for investigation and a higher level for evacuation. Commissioning the thresholds for the actual environment is most of the work, and a system commissioned to factory defaults in a dusty space will be a nuisance.
Maintenance is different
The pipe network needs airflow testing rather than device testing, filters need changing, and sampling holes can block. A maintenance contract written for point detectors will not cover any of it. If your building has an aspirating system, check explicitly that the service visit includes airflow verification and filter replacement, because a blocked pipe network produces a system that appears healthy and samples nothing.
