Testing is priced per analysis. One suspect ceiling is one sample and one price; a house where four different materials are in question is four analyses, and the bill scales accordingly. That is the whole shape of it, and it is why quotes that sound very different usually differ on how many samples they include and on whether somebody is attending to take them.
The sample is the unit
Each material analysed is a separate laboratory job with its own certificate. Two ceilings in the same house are two samples because they may be different materials, and a tile and the adhesive beneath it are two more. Ask for a price per sample and an estimate of how many the situation needs, rather than a price for the visit.
Attended sampling against posting
A surveyor attending to take the samples costs more than posting material in, and it buys two things: the material is taken under control rather than broken off by an owner, and the chain of custody is documented. For anything a contractor or a solicitor will read, attended sampling is the one worth having.
When a survey is cheaper
If more than a few materials are in question, or if what is needed is a document that covers a building rather than a certificate that covers a panel, a survey is usually better value than a run of individual tests. The samples come inside it, and so does the plan, the risk assessment and the register.
Turnaround changes the price
Standard analysis is quoted in working days from the sample reaching the laboratory. Same day and next day are available and cost more. If a sale, a completion date or a contractor's start is waiting on the result, say so when you book rather than after.

No. A result speaks for the sample it came from. Systematic coverage of a building is what a survey does.
Is a cheap postal test worth it?
The analysis is the same analysis if the laboratory is accredited. What you lose is the controlled sampling and the chain of custody, which matters whenever somebody else has to rely on the result.
