Timber does not contain asbestos. What sits against timber often does: the insulating board lining behind panelling, the bituminous felt under a floor, the gaskets in flanges and appliance doors, and the rope seals around flues, stoves and boiler doors. Those small items are easy to overlook precisely because they are small, and they are often the last asbestos left in an otherwise cleared plant room.
Asbestos gaskets in pipework and plant
Compressed asbestos fibre gaskets were standard in pipework flanges, pumps, valves and appliances for decades. They are usually thin, grey or off white, and bonded hard to the flange faces. Removing them is normally non-licensed work, and the hazard is in scraping the residue off dry, which is exactly what a maintenance fitter does without thinking if nobody has told them.
Asbestos rope seals
Asbestos rope was used around stove and boiler doors, flue joints, oven seals and inspection covers. It is white or grey, braided or twisted, and it frays. A frayed rope seal is friable material in a place people reach into, which is why it is worth identifying before a stove is serviced rather than after.

Asbestos insulating board behind timber panelling, bitumen felt beneath floorboards, and millboard lining behind fire surrounds and inside old appliances. Where a survey records timber panelling in an older building, the question is what is behind it rather than what it is made of.
Why the small items matter
Plant rooms and boiler houses get stripped and refitted many times, and the last asbestos in them is usually a gasket or a rope. It belongs on the register with the big items, and every maintenance contractor should be shown it before they open anything. That is the duty to provide information doing its job.
Questions people ask about asbestos in wood
Is there asbestos in wood doors?
Not in the timber, but older fire doors were often lined or cored with asbestos insulating board behind the wood, and HSE lists an insulating board door with asbestos fire proofing among its examples of non-licensed work. A heavy flush door in a building from before 2000 is treated as possible asbestos until a survey or sample says otherwise.
Does old timber contain asbestos?
No. Timber is timber. The materials fixed to it, behind it or under it are where the question lies.
Is an asbestos gasket worth worrying about?
It is small and it is real, particularly when scraped dry. Identify it, tell the fitter, and let them work wet with hand tools.
Can I replace a stove rope seal myself?
Get it identified first. Modern replacement ropes are not asbestos; the one coming out of an old appliance may be, and pulling a frayed rope out dry is the disturbance.
