People arrive at this subject with a photograph, and a photograph is genuinely useful for one thing: deciding whether something is worth sampling. It cannot identify asbestos, because the fibres are microscopic and the products were manufactured identically before and after the ban. A surveyor looking at your picture can tell you what it might be and how confident they are, which is a different sentence from what it is.
What an image can show
Format, age, condition and context. A nine inch floor tile, a corrugated grey sheet, a soft pale board behind a heater, a fibrous covering on a pipe: those are all recognisable as candidates. So is damage, which changes the urgency more than the identification does. A photograph of a broken panel with debris beneath it is worth sending to somebody today.
What it cannot show
Whether the material contains asbestos. Whether a coating is over a board or over plaster. What is behind, above or under it. And what type is present, which only analysis names. Two identical photographs can be two different materials, which is why every route to a decision passes through a laboratory.
Taking a useful photograph
Photograph the whole element and then a close detail, with something for scale. Include any broken edge, any label or manufacturer mark, and the room it is in. Say when the building was built or refurbished. None of that identifies the material and all of it helps a surveyor tell you whether to sample it and how urgent it is.

If it is intact and nobody is working on it, leave it alone and book a sample or a survey. If it is broken, close the area, leave the debris and get advice today. Do not send anybody a piece of the material in the post as a photograph substitute: sampling is a controlled act and it belongs to somebody trained to do it.
